The seller offers for sale a 1958 BMW Isetta 300, an iconic microcar from the post-war era. This particular vehicle underwent a restoration in 2019, with documentation available, and was subsequently appraised in Germany, receiving a condition rating of “Allgemeinzustand 1.” Since then, the Isetta has seen little use and has been kept in dry storage, leaving it in carefully preserved condition.
Powered by a 300 cc single-cylinder petrol engine paired with a manual transmission, the Isetta 300 exemplifies the minimalistic yet innovative engineering of the 1950s. With its distinctive bubble-shaped body and single front-entry door, it became one of the most recognizable small cars of its time.
The exterior was refinished during the restoration, with the body carefully repainted in line with its original design. Chrome details, including bumpers and trim, present very well, and the rubbers around doors, windows, and hinges are in good condition.
The interior was also restored, with seat upholstery and flooring renewed in authentic materials. Color samples of the fabric are included in the documentation. An additional protective mat has preserved the floor covering since restoration. Only the gear lever may require some minor attention. Otherwise, the cabin offers the retro charm of the late 1950s while reflecting the work performed.
Mechanically, the car is reported to be complete and functional, with no issues in starting, engine operation, or gearbox use. Lights, indicators, and electrics function as intended. It does not currently carry a road inspection, as this is no longer required for cars of its age, and it has not been used regularly in recent years. The Isetta remains dry-stored indoors, helping to maintain its overall preservation.
The BMW Isetta holds a special place in automotive history. Originally based on the Italian Iso design, BMW acquired the license to build the car in the 1950s, adapting it to suit German production standards. At a time when fuel-efficient, low-cost vehicles were urgently needed in post-war Europe, the Isetta provided affordable mobility for thousands of families. Its unique front-hinged door, small footprint, and remarkable fuel economy made it practical in crowded cities while also capturing imaginations with its unusual shape.
Introduced in Germany in 1955, the Isetta became the best-selling single-cylinder car in the world during its production run. It played a key role in helping BMW recover financially during the 1950s, bridging the gap until the company could expand into larger sedans and sports cars. The Isetta’s design simplicity, charm, and functionality also earned it global recognition, with production versions appearing in several countries. Today, the car stands as a cultural icon, often representing 1950s optimism and ingenuity.
For collectors, the Isetta 300 is especially valued in restored condition. Its small size, instantly recognizable styling, and historical importance continue to attract enthusiasts and museums alike. The fact that this example has been awarded an appraisal rating in Germany, with restoration documented, further enhances its collectability. Its preservation indoors and minimal use since restoration suggest that it has been treated as a display and collector’s item rather than a regular driver.
Imperfections are limited to very minor wear on the gear lever. No mechanical defects, rust, or accident history have been reported. Buyers should nonetheless anticipate the typical care and maintenance associated with owning a restored microcar of this era, including periodic servicing despite its minimal use in recent years.
