The seller offers for sale this 1975 BMW E9 3.0 CS, a desirable classic coupé presented in restored condition. Originally delivered to Germany, the car was imported into the Netherlands in 1995. The current owner has cared for the vehicle since 2007, during which time a series of mechanical and cosmetic improvements have been carried out.
Notably, the original 2.5-litre engine was replaced in 2008 with a 3.0-litre inline-six. Additional mechanical work since then includes a new radiator, clutch cylinder, water pump, thermostat, middle and end exhaust sections, and in 2022, a switch from Zenith 35/40 carburettors to Weber 32/36 units, fitted with new hoses and clamps. The braking system has also been upgraded with refurbished front calipers, and in 2024, the car received four new 225/50 tyres and a new battery.
Visually, the E9 underwent restoration starting in 2021. Bodywork included the replacement of floor sections, lower rear valance, and sills, followed by a full repaint in the original BMW Baikal Blue metallic. The result is a striking finish that highlights the elegant lines of the Karmann-built coupé.
Inside, the velour upholstery was renewed in 2020 in beige, including the boot and rear shelf. The front and rear seats—still trimmed in beige imitation leather—were cleaned and treated. The door panels were refinished, new weather seals installed, and various chrome fittings on seats and doors replaced. A leather sports steering wheel was also added, complementing the refined cabin.
Mechanically, the car is described as good. Lighting and indicators function correctly, and the vehicle holds a valid Dutch roadworthiness certificate. The odometer reads 52,500 km, though this figure is not verified by documentation.
The E9 platform, produced from 1968 to 1975, is one of BMW’s most iconic coupés. It was a direct evolution of the 2000 C/CS and was developed to house larger six-cylinder engines. The 3.0 CS, launched in 1971, featured the M30 engine and was positioned as a refined yet capable grand tourer.
With elegant proportions, frameless windows, and a driver-focused cockpit, the E9 was both sophisticated and purposeful. It gained motorsport credibility with the 3.0 CSL, the homologation special that went on to great success in touring car racing.
Even in non-CSL form, the 3.0 CS earned a strong reputation for its balance of style and performance. Its lightweight construction—thanks to Karmann’s aluminium-intensive bodywork—combined with rear-wheel drive and a smooth inline-six, made it an engaging car to drive.
Today, surviving E9s in solid condition are increasingly rare. Rust-prone bodywork and the high cost of restoration have thinned their numbers. This example, with its upgraded engine, fresh cosmetics, and well-documented history under long-term ownership, offers a usable and appealing take on one of BMW’s finest pre-M division classics.
