The seller offers for sale this 1992 BMW 850i, a remarkable E31 finished in the ultra-rare Veilchenblau metallic (code 490) with a unique bi-colour Nappa leather interior in purple and pink (code 9990). Produced in Dingolfing on 28 April 1992 and first delivered in June 1992 in Schriesheim, Germany, this example represents one of just 35 cars ever built in this colour. Its first and only owner, a German hotelier, kept the car until 2009 when it underwent a major BMW dealership service, including engine removal, gasket and timing chain replacement, new water pump, and renewed electrical components. The invoice remained unpaid, and the car remained stored indoors at the dealership for 11 years until sold in 2020.
The current owner purchased the car in 2021 and commissioned a complete professional repaint in the original Veilchenblau. Paint was stripped to bare metal, and every detail was restored with photographic documentation. The V12 engine runs smoothly, the gearbox shifts perfectly, and systems are functional. The full-leather cabin—covering seats, dashboard, and roof lining—was carefully refreshed while preserving originality. The underbody is free of visible rust and sealed, and the car retains its period BMW equipment including sport seats, electric memory adjustment, heated seats, and sunroof.
The BMW 850i from the E31 generation is an iconic grand tourer that epitomises 1990s automotive luxury and engineering ambition. Powered by a 5.0-litre V12 engine producing 300 horsepower, it offered cutting-edge technology including electronic throttle, multi-link rear suspension, and an aerodynamic body with pop-up headlights. Its design, penned under Klaus Kapitza, remains timeless and instantly recognisable. Today, the 8 Series stands as one of BMW’s most elegant and innovative classics, combining comfort, performance, and exclusivity in equal measure—qualities perfectly embodied by this unique individual-specification example.
