The private seller offers for sale this 1988 Barkas B 1000, powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder two-stroke engine, paired with a manual transmission. This example started life as a KLF TS-8, the light firefighting vehicle version of the B 1000 used by fire brigades across the former GDR, and it still wears its striking red and white livery. The odometer shows 46,967 km. The van is registered with historic vehicle status and, according to an independent appraisal, has been rated condition grade 2. The periodic technical inspection is valid until 2028.

Over the years the Barkas has been fitted with a number of practical additions that make it easier to use today, including an additional electric cooling fan, an extra fuel pump and a water temperature gauge. An auxiliary heater has also been installed, and the car comes with many small parts. The interior has been fitted with quilted wall panelling in the rear, and the load area offers plenty of space for camping, transport or display use. With its friendly face, boxy proportions and fire brigade history, this B 1000 is a charming and highly recognisable piece of East German automotive culture.

The Barkas B 1000 was built by VEB Barkas-Werke in Hainichen and later Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz) from 1961 until 1991. Remarkably modern at its launch, it featured front-wheel drive, forward-control cab design and independent suspension, which gave it a low, flat load floor and a generous interior. It was produced in many versions, from panel vans and minibuses to ambulances, police vehicles and fire brigade vehicles such as this KLF, and it became one of the most familiar commercial vehicles in Eastern Europe.

Power comes from the 993 cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine shared with the Wartburg 353, known for its distinctive sound, simple construction and easy maintenance. The four-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive layout give the B 1000 surprisingly agile handling for a van of its size. Today, well-kept Barkas vans, and especially former emergency service vehicles with their original livery, are increasingly sought-after by collectors of East German vehicles and by enthusiasts looking for a characterful classic camper or event vehicle.
