Description

Alfa Romeo GT 1600 Junior | 1974

Highlights:

– Restored with rebuilt 1600cc engine
– Original factory colour respray
– Documented mileage of 125,000 km
– Dutch registration with valid inspection

The seller offers for sale a 1974 Alfa Romeo GT 1600 Juior, finished in its original factory colour and fitted with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. This example was imported from Belgium, where the car underwent a body restoration. The restoration remained unfinished after the previous owner passed away in 2018. Since then, the current owner has completed a number of mechanical and cosmetic improvements, including a rebuilt 1600 engine, refurbished carburettors, a rebuilt steering box, and a reconditioned rear axle. Additional items replaced include the radiator, tachometer, and odometer.

The gearbox was not rebuilt, as it continues to operate well, though there is a minor oil seepage after longer drives.

The car features original wheels with good tyres, and a second set of sandblasted and painted ATS wheels with new tyres is optionally available for an additional price. Price and conditions for this must be agreed upon by seller and buyer after auction of this vehicle. The sale of the extra set of ATS wheels is not part of the auction.

The exterior of the vehicle is in good condition, with a fresh coat of paint applied during the earlier restoration. The colour matches the car’s original specification. There are minor imperfections present: a small dent and paint damage on the left rear wheel arch, and a light scratch near the left door. These flaws are limited in size and do not affect structural integrity.

Inside, the car shows typical signs of age and use. The original driver’s seat has a small tear in the backrest but the cushion remains in acceptable condition. The passenger seat and rear bench have been reupholstered. The dashboard has a small hole, likely from a previously mounted gauge, and the headliner, though intact, has not been fitted evenly. Instrumentation, lighting, horn, and wipers are reported to be in working order. The cigarette lighter is currently not connected.

The car drives and shifts, and retains its factory braking system and suspension. The car has passed its Dutch roadworthiness inspection.

The Alfa Romeo GT 1600 Junior belongs to the popular “105” series of coupes designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time with Bertone. Introduced in the early 1960s, the 105 series combined elegant styling with engaging performance. By the time this 1974 model was built, the GT 1600 had evolved into a well-balanced touring coupe with a proven drivetrain and refined road manners. Alfa’s signature twin-cam four-cylinder engine was renowned for its lively character and high-revving nature, making even the smaller displacement models a joy to drive.

The 1600 GT was aimed at buyers looking for an affordable entry into Alfa ownership while retaining the visual and dynamic charm of the higher-performance variants. Its lightweight construction and responsive handling made it a competent car for both spirited driving and relaxed cruising. The simple mechanical layout—rear-wheel drive, double-wishbone front suspension, and disc brakes all around—contributed to its reputation for driving enjoyment.

While not as rare or powerful as the GTA or GTV models, the GT 1600 remains a desirable classic due to its understated looks and reliable mechanical foundation. This particular example, with its rebuilt drivetrain and classic styling, is a representative of Alfa Romeo’s heritage in producing accessible, performance-oriented coupes. With period-correct design cues and a functional mechanical base, it offers an authentic vintage driving experience.
