The seller offers for sale this 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Ponton, a refined post-war sedan representing the elegance of 1950s German craftsmanship. Previously displayed in a Swedish museum, the car was acquired through the KLARAVIK AB auction in Karlstad. After purchase, the current owner carried out an mechanical service including engine and radiator maintenance, as well as a professional interior restoration focused on the wood lacquer and door trims. The paintwork presents well, showing only minor, isolated rusty spots. It is unclear whether it remains the factory paint or an older Swedish respray.
The interior is well preserved with high-quality fabric seats, restored wood accents in beautiful colour and finish, and functional instruments, horn, and radio. Windows and wipers operate correctly. The car starts with some effort but runs smoothly once on, with no smoke or abnormal engine or gearbox noise. The underside and boot are coated with anti-rust protection, adding to its preservation.
It comes with a valid technical inspection and is ready to drive.
The Mercedes-Benz Ponton series marked a turning point in Mercedes engineering, introducing the first monocoque body design that combined strength with comfort. The 220 S, positioned at the top of the Ponton range, offered luxury appointments, smooth performance, and durability that made it a favourite among diplomats and professionals of the era. Its timeless design and solid road manners continue to appeal to collectors seeking understated sophistication.
