Description

MG YB Saloon | 1952

Highlights:

  • 1,250 cc inline four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a manual gearbox
  • Engine rebuild in 2009, converted for unleaded fuel
  • Original leather seats with renewed door panel trim
  • Fitted with electronic ignition (original parts included)

The seller offers for sale this 1952 MG YB Saloon RHD, finished in the factory colour combination of Sequoia Cream with Maroon accents. Powered by a 1,250 cc inline four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a manual gearbox, this right-hand-drive saloon retains much of its period character.

Prior to import, the car underwent body and structural work in Northern England, including replacement of sills and some brake lines. It was repainted in its original MG two-tone colours and passed a UK roadworthiness test before shipment. Since 2008, the current owner has carried out a series of documented mechanical restorations: brake cylinders and tyres replaced in 2008, engine rebuild in 2009 (converted for unleaded fuel), new front springs and main brake cylinder in 2010, and installation of electronic ignition in 2012. Other works include a stainless steel exhaust silencer, fuel tank cleaning, and a new fuel pump in 2022.

The body presents well but shows some imperfections in the paint finish, including minor blistering likely from insufficient surface preparation before respray. Rust is present at the lower edges of the doors.

Inside, the original red leather front and rear seats remain in place, showing age-appropriate wear but retaining usability. Door panels have been re-trimmed in synthetic leather, with the forward cabin trim yet to be installed (material supplied). The wooden window frames and walnut veneer dashboard are largely intact, though the clock is inoperative.

Mechanically, the car is described as solid and starts easily without smoke or abnormal noises. The gearbox operates smoothly, and all lights and indicators function. Some outstanding tasks remain, including reinstalling the original jacking system (parts present), replacing the front windscreen rubber seal (seal supplied), connecting the original trafficators to the steering column switch, and repairing the interior lighting and rear sun visor.
The car lacks a technical inspection certificate because it’s not requiered for cars of this age in the Netherlands.

The MG YB, produced from 1951 to 1953, represented the final evolution of the post-war MG saloon line. It built on the earlier YA model but introduced significant improvements, including independent front suspension with coil springs and wishbones, rack-and-pinion steering, and larger 8-inch hydraulic drum brakes. These features gave the YB excellent handling for its era and set it apart from many rivals in the small saloon segment. Powered by the proven XPAG 1,250 cc engine, also found in the MG T-series sports cars, the YB combined respectable performance with a comfortable, well-appointed interior.

Only around 1,301 YB Saloons were produced, making surviving examples relatively rare. The model’s blend of sports car mechanicals, elegant coachbuilt styling, and modest proportions has earned it a dedicated following among MG enthusiasts. Original right-hand-drive cars in factory colours, especially with a traceable history, are particularly desirable.

This 1952 example, with its documented history, mechanical work and preserved originality, offers an attractive opportunity for collectors and drivers alike. With only light finishing work remaining, it stands as a usable and engaging classic that reflects MG’s engineering ethos in the early post-war years.
