Description

Triumph Stag | 1976

Highlights:

  • V8 engine paired with automatic transmission
  • Previously restored example with working hardtop
  • Attractive cabriolet with matching interior
  • Recently serviced (engine and gearbox)
  • Additional cooling fan and power switch installed

The seller offers for sale this 1976 Triumph Stag, a classic British cabriolet known for its combination of style and touring comfort. This particular example is equipped with a 2997 cc V8 petrol engine and automatic transmission. The vehicle currently shows 38,170 km on the odometer (not guaranteed) and was purchased from the Netherlands, where the previous owner kept it for 12 years with regular annual inspections.

The car underwent a full restoration several years ago. While not recent, the work remains visible and structurally intact, with only a few minor imperfections. It retains its original design elements and comes with a color-matched hardtop, visible in the gallery. The car has been fitted with an extra electric cooling fan and power switch, practical enhancements that support its usability in warmer conditions. In June, the engine and gearbox received a fresh oil service. It starts easily, drives reliably, and all lighting and signals are functional.

The bodywork presents well with paint in a generally tidy condition, though a few minor cosmetic imperfections are noted. There is one small rust bubble forming at the door threshold, approximately the size of a coin. The rest of the body is reported to be clean and free of accident history. The convertible top and detachable hardtop both appear in solid visual condition. The interior is complete, matching the exterior well, and shows only light wear consistent with age. Upholstery, dashboard and trim are all presentable, with no need for immediate repair or replacement.

Launched in 1970, the Triumph Stag was intended as a luxury sports tourer, bridging the gap between performance convertibles and refined cruisers. Designed by the Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, the Stag featured a distinctive T-bar roll hoop and was powered by a Triumph-designed V8 engine—a rare configuration among British cars of the time. The 3.0-litre unit was coupled to either a manual or automatic transmission, with the latter aimed at buyers seeking relaxed long-distance travel.

Though the Stag offered an appealing blend of comfort and sportiness, it became known for reliability issues, especially related to cooling. Many owners—including this one—opted to improve the cooling system with auxiliary fans or radiator upgrades. Despite these early concerns, the Stag developed a loyal following, thanks to its unique design and relatively limited production. Only around 25,000 examples were made during its eight-year run.

Today, the Triumph Stag is considered a usable classic, particularly appreciated for its practicality as a four-seater convertible with a V8 soundtrack. The removable hardtop makes it a true year-round driver for those who enjoy vintage motoring. Its styling, interior layout, and light steering give it an unmistakable 1970s character. Collectors look for well-maintained or sympathetically restored examples like this one, especially those with a working hardtop and factory-correct mechanicals.

The only defect noted by the seller is a small rust bubble on the door threshold, no larger than one centimetre. A few minor imperfections in the paintwork are visible in the gallery. The restoration is older and not without age, but the car presents consistently. No structural or mechanical damage is reported, and all functions are said to operate properly.
