The seller offers for sale this 1951 MG TD Mk.1 Cabriolet, a classic British two-seater that combines vintage design with engaging driving characteristics. Equipped with a 1250cc inline four-cylinder engine and a manual gearbox, this MG offers a purist driving experience typical of post-war European sports cars. This example is a left-hand drive U.S. import, finished in a red synthetic leather interior that complements its open-top configuration.

The paintwork is in presentable condition, with only minor user marks that come with age. The car features a traditional steel body over a separate ladder-frame chassis, reflecting the period-correct construction.

This MG is in good overall condition. The exterior shows minimal signs of aging, and no body or paint corrections are currently required. The red finish holds up well in sunlight and aligns with the car’s vintage appeal, though some minor blemishes may be present on close inspection. The interior is tidy, with the red upholstery described as being in good condition. While not freshly restored, the interior is clean and well-kept. The car is not subject to regular inspection due to its age but has been maintained by a garage.

Mechanically, the vehicle is reported to be solid. The engine has been overhauled by a professional technician and has run very little since then. It still needs to be run in.The engine has been fitted with a new camshaft and a crankshaft seal against oil leakage. The carburetors have been overhauled as well as the starter motor and radiator. The gearbox has also been overhauled. The dynamo has been replaced by a Dynator Wasp alternating current dynamo that has the appearance of the original. Furthermore, there is a 123 ignition with new wiring and coil. A stainless steel exhaust has also been fitted and a new battery has recently been installed. The valve cover and side cover have been replaced, original parts are present.

The MG TD debuted in 1950 as a successor to the MG TC, bringing several technical updates to the celebrated T-series of British sports cars. While preserving the basic styling cues—such as swept fenders, separate headlights, and an upright grille—the TD featured a more rigid chassis, rack-and-pinion steering, and improved suspension. It was one of the first MGs to appeal to both European and American buyers, the latter accounting for a large share of its total production.

The TD was unique in its combination of vintage looks and more modern handling. The car employed independent front suspension with coil springs, a significant improvement over the TC’s leaf-sprung setup. This enhanced drivability and comfort, making the TD a more accessible sports car for the masses. Despite only producing around 54 horsepower, the car was light and nimble, providing an enjoyable experience on winding roads.

The majority of TDs were exported to North America, often in left-hand drive. This makes original left-hand-drive models like the one offered here particularly suitable for continental buyers. While many owners opted for aftermarket upgrades or restoration, this car remains close to its original mechanical specification. The MG TD occupies a respected position in the evolution of British sports cars, bridging the gap between pre-war design and post-war usability.

For collectors and enthusiasts, the TD represents a charming and reliable entry into classic motoring. Its simple mechanical layout makes it easy to maintain, while its design retains the elegance of a bygone era. Whether enjoyed on sunny country roads or displayed at local events, this MG TD is a stylish and historically significant choice.
