The seller offers for sale a 1962 Ford Thunderbird Convertible, featuring a 6,392cc V8 engine coupled with a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic gearbox. Imported from California and privately owned in Germany since 2011, this model represents the third generation of Thunderbird, notable for its jet-age styling, wide stance, and distinctive afterburner-style tail lights. Finished in its factory-correct red, the vehicle underwent partial repainting in 2023 following localised bodywork. The car is fitted with the optional Sport Roadster tonneau panel that transforms the rear seat area into a two-seater appearance, but the full rear seating remains available beneath.
The cabin is presented in original layout with new seat upholstery and trim. The dashboard, with its signature deep-set round instruments, is intact and includes brushed aluminium finishes. Electrical components, including power windows and seat adjustment, are operational. A retro-look radio with USB has been fitted in place of the original unit, which is included in the sale. The soft top has been re-covered, and the hydraulic system along with the electrical relay system were overhauled for reliable operation.
Technically, the Thunderbird benefits from extensive servicing and part replacement, including a reconditioned carburettor, new alternator, starter motor, steering gear, ignition distributor, voltage regulator, fan, brakes, lines, dampers, and body seals. The 300 hp big-block engine responds cleanly, providing strong low-end torque and classic American cruising dynamics. The seller notes that the car is quick for its age and delivers a confident driving experience. It comes with documentation, restoration photos, and a Classic Data appraisal confirming a 2+ overall grade.
The Ford Thunderbird debuted in 1955 as a response to the Chevrolet Corvette, but positioned itself more as a personal luxury car than a pure sports car. The third generation, introduced in 1961, brought a completely new design with more aggressive styling and a greater emphasis on power and road presence. The Thunderbird’s low roofline, long hood, and dramatic tail formed part of the growing American fascination with aerospace design language. It gained popularity with those seeking comfort, power, and prestige wrapped in a bold exterior.
By 1962, Ford introduced the Sport Roadster package, which added a fiberglass tonneau cover, wire wheels, and special badging. Though resembling a two-seater, the cover could be removed to reveal a rear bench, combining visual appeal with practicality. While some owners removed the tonneau permanently, it remains a sought-after feature today. Period advertising leaned heavily into the car’s premium positioning—marketed not just as a performance car but as a status symbol. It found favour with celebrities and was even chosen as the pace car for the 1961 Indianapolis 500.
The Thunderbird’s advanced features for the time included power-operated accessories, swing-away steering wheel, and elaborate trim detailing. It was also one of the first cars to be offered with factory-installed seat belts and was available with an impressive list of comfort options. Today, the 1961–1963 Thunderbird is valued for its distinct design and solid build quality. While not as nimble as European sports cars, it remains an icon of 1960s American motoring culture and retains a strong following among collectors, especially when original or lightly restored.
One area of the body—driver-side door and side panel—was repaired by a specialist workshop in 2023. Paintwork was refreshed during this process. No rust or structural issues are currently noted. Chrome details remain intact with minor age-related wear. The interior is clean with no major damage, though it has been reupholstered. The tonneau cover is in working condition, and the convertible top mechanism functions after the recent restoration. No major defects or operational issues are declared by the seller.
