  • 2138cc 4-cylinder engine with rebuilt gearbox
  • Front disc brakes, valid inspection, and European registration

The seller offers for sale this 1964 Triumph TR4, a classic British open-top sports car with a well-documented history and long-term family ownership. Originally imported from California to the Netherlands, the car was acquired by the seller’s father and underwent a complete restoration between 1993 and 1995.

Powering the TR4 is a 2138cc inline-four engine, paired to a manual gearbox that has since been rebuilt. The seller notes that the car has been regularly serviced over the years, though not driven much recently. The vehicle benefits from standard front disc brakes, giving it improved stopping power compared to earlier Triumph models. Mechanically, the car is in good condition. Lighting, indicators, and other electrical systems are functional. This car has a valid technical inspection certificate.

The exterior paintwork is generally in good condition, though there are a few small areas in need of touch-up. The seller also notes some wear around the grommet area, which could benefit from restoration. There is a minor tendency for surface rust to appear in the rear compartment near the spare tire, though this is minimal and not structural. Overall, the body is good.

The interior is rated in good condition. The leather front seats remain in near-new appearance, but some items such as door panels and sun visors have dried out and may require repair or replacement. The rear seat upholstery does not match the quality of the front and would benefit from attention. Dashboard instruments and controls appear intact and consistent with the car’s age and character.

The Triumph TR4, introduced in 1961, marked a significant design evolution for the Triumph brand. Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, the TR4 replaced the curvier TR3 with more modern and angular lines, a more practical fixed wind-up window system, and a revised chassis with improved interior space. It retained the rugged 4-cylinder engine of its predecessor but introduced a wider track, rack-and-pinion steering, and optional overdrive for improved touring capability.

With a factory-rated 105 horsepower, the TR4 delivered sprightly performance for its time and handled well thanks to its lightweight and independent front suspension. Unlike many sports cars of the 1960s, the TR4 also offered reasonable luggage space and the optional “Surrey Top” — a precursor to the modern Targa roof. Disc brakes on the front axle were standard, which improved braking safety and made the TR4 suitable for spirited driving on winding roads.

Produced until 1965, the TR4 remains a favorite among classic car enthusiasts for its balance of style, usability, and mechanical simplicity. It was widely exported and raced in various motorsport events, including rally stages and endurance runs. The TR4’s popularity today is supported by a strong community of owners and excellent parts availability.

This 1964 example presents an opportunity to acquire a cared-for and largely preserved TR4 with the added benefit of a known restoration history. Whether returned to frequent use or displayed in vintage car events, it represents a fine slice of 1960s British motoring heritage.
