The seller offers for sale this 1973 BMW 2002 Tii, a retro-styled restomod originally delivered as a 1802 in Italy and now transformed into a visually faithful 2002 Turbo tribute. It features a completely rebuilt 2.0L engine to 2002 Tii specifications, enhanced with new dual Weber carburetors and accompanied by a five-speed BMW sport gearbox. The first gear is positioned left and down, with gears two through five in the traditional H-pattern.
The body is finished in black, a rare and striking colour for a 2002, and wears a Turbo-style front spoiler, wide arches, and optional boot spoiler (supplied separately). The car rides on Alpina-style 15-inch wheels and a lowered suspension setup composed of Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers, giving it a more aggressive stance and improved handling. It benefits from updated disc brakes and a new stainless exhaust system.
Paintwork is generally in good condition, with some swirl marks that could benefit from professional detailing. The chrome trim shows light patina and could be polished to reach a higher standard, but is present and complete. The car has passed Dutch inspection.
Inside, the car retains its original beige interior, including the door panels and seats, which show minimal wear for the age. The steering wheel has been reupholstered in leather. The original 1802 console with air conditioning (Klimaanlage) was removed to accommodate the sport gearbox and will be included in the sale for those seeking to restore it to full period specification.
Mechanically, the car is rated as good. This restomod project was undertaken by a reputable Dutch BMW specialist, known for high-quality restorations of the 02-series.
The BMW 2002 has become a cult classic, particularly among vintage driving enthusiasts. Introduced in the late 1960s as part of the ‘Neue Klasse’ line, the 2002 combined a compact body with sharp handling and sporty drivetrains, laying the groundwork for BMW’s future 3-series success. It was the 2002 that helped shape BMW’s brand identity as a maker of driver-focused, rear-wheel-drive sedans.
The most iconic 2002 of all is the 2002 Turbo, released in 1973 as one of the first turbocharged production cars in Europe. Featuring flared arches, bold graphics, and boosted performance, the Turbo became a legend—but with fewer than 1,700 made, genuine examples are increasingly rare and expensive. This restomod captures the essence of that design while offering better drivability, thanks to modernised suspension and an improved drivetrain.
With its clean black finish, upgraded underpinnings, and faithful visual details, this car offers the drama and nostalgia of the 2002 Turbo at a far more accessible price point. Ideal for enthusiasts looking for classic style paired with usable, reliable performance, this unique BMW is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
