The seller offers for sale this 1962 Volvo PV 544 C, a two-door coupe with an iconic design and durable engineering typical of classic Swedish cars. This particular example has been in the hands of the current owner since 1999. While its early history is undocumented, the car was in regular use until 2007, at which point it was taken off the road due to failing its inspection. From 2008 to 2023, it underwent a significant restoration, culminating in a car that now presents as a solid and usable classic.

The PV 544 is powered by a 1780 cc four-cylinder petrol engine with a manual transmission. According to the seller, the car starts well, shows no signs of smoke or unusual engine noises, and shifts smoothly. A recent maintenance update includes a new timing set and a replacement exhaust system. The fuel gauge is currently non-functional, and the red “amp” light remains on during driving, possibly indicating the need for alternator servicing.

In 2021, the body was resprayed in wine red using a durable two-component paint system. The car was originally black, but the new color suits its rounded vintage silhouette. The body remains free from rust, and the car has been stored indoors since the respray. There is minor paint damage on the inside of the left door due to a slightly stiff hinge, but otherwise the finish is well preserved.

The interior features the original black vinyl upholstery, which is still in decent condition. The floor mats have been replaced, and the front seats remain comfortable even for longer journeys. Some rubber trim strips inside the cabin require reattachment, but overall, the interior maintains its 1960s charm with functionality. The lighting and indicators are operational, and while the car does not have a current APK inspection, this is no longer required for vehicles over 50 years old in the Netherlands.

The Volvo PV 544 is a beloved model among classic car enthusiasts and historians alike. Introduced in the late 1950s, it represented an evolution of the earlier PV 444 and became known for its combination of robustness and safety. Its semi-fastback shape and upright stance gave it a distinctive profile, and the 544 was among the first European cars to feature a padded dashboard and seat belts as standard equipment—reflecting Volvo’s early emphasis on occupant protection.

Mechanically, the PV 544 was known for its reliable B18 and B20 engines, many of which remained in use for decades. The model also gained popularity in motorsports thanks to its strong chassis and dependable drivetrain, earning its place in rally history. In Sweden and beyond, the PV series developed a reputation as the car that “just keeps going,” often racking up impressive mileages over time.

Today, the PV 544 is a symbol of post-war Scandinavian design and engineering, often cherished for its nostalgic appeal and classic lines. This particular car, lovingly restored over a long period and kept indoors, stands as a usable and characterful example of a true Volvo classic. While it has a few minor needs, it offers a sound base for regular classic motoring or as part of a vintage collection.
