The seller offers for sale this rare 1976 Volkswagen 181. Originally delivered as a civilian model in the Netherlands, this example is believed to be one of just two from that final model year registered new in the country. It has undergone a restoration, including disassembly, media blasting, panel replacement where needed, and a repaint using original-spec Standox paint. The wheel arches have been finished in Raptorliner for added durability, and the body—inside and out—was repainted during the process.
Mechanically, the 1600cc engine has been overhauled and features a new camshaft and a performance Vintage Speed exhaust. Paired with an “AT” long-ratio gearbox and upgraded IRS rear suspension, the drivetrain offers both improved drivability and reliability. A disc brake conversion has been carried out at the front to enhance stopping power. Steering, braking, electrical systems, and rubbers are new or restored. According to the seller, major technical systems were addressed during the three-year restoration, and the car currently has a valid Dutch inspection.
Inside, the cabin has been reimagined with white steering components, a Vintage Speed shifter, and custom hardwood flooring sealed with 2K clear coat. The seat frames were stripped and powder-coated, reupholstered with fresh Westfalia-style fabric for the cushions, and trimmed with vinyl side and back panels. The rear bench has been custom-made to provide extra width, with a removable center insert between the backrests. Overall, the interior presents with high attention to detail and period-correct style.
The paint and bodywork are rated as good. Panel fit and paint depth are consistent. The exterior and underside reflect the high level of finish expected of a high-end classic restoration.
The Volkswagen 181 originated from a military design—the Type 82 Kübelwagen used during World War II. Introduced in civilian form in 1968, the 181 used a mix of Beetle and Karmann Ghia parts, offering a versatile and affordable off-road-capable utility vehicle. Sold in various markets under different names—including “Thing” in the United States, “Trekker” in the UK, and simply “181” in Europe—the model gained a cult following for its quirky styling and rugged mechanical simplicity.
Production continued into the early 1980s for military clients, but civilian sales in Western Europe were largely wrapped up by 1978. By 1976, very few units were still being officially delivered to private buyers in the Netherlands, making this example an exceptional survivor. While basic in design, the 181 offered practical modularity: removable doors, a folding windshield, and an open cabin layout made it ideal for beach towns, rural roads, and adventure tourism. Its air-cooled flat-four engine meant easy maintenance and compatibility with the vast aftermarket of VW parts.
Today, restored examples like this are sought after by collectors who value its utilitarian charm and timeless simplicity. With a completed restoration, desirable upgrades, and unique provenance, this example is ready for show, leisure driving, or inclusion in a private collection.
