The seller offers for sale a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo, a two-door coupé equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and a manual transmission. This model, known internally as the 951, was delivered new to a dealership in Roslyn, New York in 1985. The original service book is stamped until 1988, after which the car changed ownership and continued its life off the radar until 2019, when it was purchased via Bring a Trailer. The car was then imported to the Netherlands, where it received a Dutch registration in 2021.
The car comes with a folder of documentation, including past invoices, shipment papers, and receipts from both the previous and current owner. Key maintenance points include new Hankook tires in the correct sizes fitted in 2023, a replaced starter motor, new sensors, recent brake fluid and oil service, and a refurbished original air filter housing. The air conditioning system in the engine bay has been removed, although interior components and piping remain in place. An aftermarket Momo Pro Tipo steering wheel is installed.
While technically in good condition, this car is not presented as a showpiece. The body and paintwork are in a used but honest state. There are signs of stone chipping and minor dents and scratches across the bodywork. The rear bumper and fuel cap area have been resprayed, and the US bumper was replaced with a European version. A professional polish or correction could significantly improve the overall appearance.
The interior is functional and retains a clean but lived-in feel. The dashboard has a small crack below the windscreen, and the seats have been reupholstered by a previous owner in a non-original fabric. Additional matching fabric is included. The carpeting throughout the car shows wear and appears to have been removed in the past. The sunroof unlock mechanism is faulty, though the roof can still be opened. Overall, the interior could benefit from some cosmetic attention, but remains usable as-is.
The Porsche 944 Turbo represents a significant chapter in Porsche’s transaxle history. Introduced in 1985, the Turbo variant built upon the standard 944’s balanced chassis with a turbocharged version of its 2.5L inline-four engine, delivering performance figures that brought it close to 911 territory. The Turbo featured revised suspension geometry, larger brakes, and a more aerodynamic body kit. Its distinctive wide stance, pop-up headlights, and unique rear spoiler made it one of the more aggressive-looking models of the 1980s.
Praised for its sharp handling and excellent weight distribution, the 944 Turbo quickly gained a reputation as one of the best-handling cars of its era. It was also the first car to come with driver and passenger airbags as standard equipment. Although sometimes overlooked in the shadow of the 911, the 944 Turbo has steadily gained recognition among enthusiasts for its blend of performance, comfort, and usability. It remains one of the more affordable entries into classic Porsche ownership, with rising collectability thanks to its robust mechanicals and distinctive 1980s styling.
This example offers an authentic, usable base for enjoyment or light restoration. Whether you’re after a period-correct weekend car or a project with solid fundamentals, this 944 Turbo provides a compelling platform.
