The private seller offers for sale this 1975 Volkswagen Beetle 1200, powered by a 1.2-litre air-cooled flat-four petrol engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Finished in a cheerful light blue, the car has been repainted in its original colour and is paired with a black interior, with matching black seats, door cards with their characteristic elasticated map pockets, a slim black steering wheel and the classic single-dial body-coloured dashboard. A notable detail of this example is its right-hand drive configuration, which sets it apart from the majority of Beetles found on the continent. The seller describes the bodywork and paint as presenting well and the interior as clean and well preserved, while the floors and chassis are in satisfactory overall condition with some light surface corrosion consistent with the age of the car.

In 2016 the car underwent an extensive mechanical restoration carried out by an air-cooled Volkswagen specialist, representing more than 90 hours of work. The work included a major engine and ignition service, a complete overhaul of the braking system, refurbishment of the steering and suspension, refurbishment of the clutch and transmission, improvements to the electrical system, and further work on the running gear, interior, seals and the original heating system. Following this work the car passed its technical inspection, and it has covered only approximately 3,000 km since. In 2021 both the fuel pump and the carburettor were replaced. As the car has seen little use in recent years, it currently has no recent technical inspection. The complete restoration invoices are included, together with an extensive photographic dossier covering the bodywork, interior, engine bay, front luggage compartment and underbody.

Few cars have reached the status of the Volkswagen Beetle. Conceived in the 1930s to Ferdinand Porsche’s design brief for an affordable car for the people, the Type 1 went into civilian series production after the Second World War and went on to become a worldwide phenomenon. With more than 21.5 million examples built between 1945 and 2003, it overtook the Ford Model T as the best-selling car built on a single platform, and it was produced and sold on every inhabited continent. The 1200 was the entry point to the range throughout the 1970s, offering the pure, unpretentious Beetle experience that made the car so loved in the first place.

The appeal of the Beetle lies in its honesty and simplicity. The rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four delivers its unmistakable soundtrack and is known for its robust, easy-to-maintain engineering, while the torsion bar suspension and compact dimensions give the car a lively and characterful feel on the road. The rounded silhouette, separate wings, running boards and upright windscreen are among the most recognisable shapes in automotive history. Supported by a vast specialist network and an enthusiastic owners’ community, a well documented Beetle like this one is an accessible and enjoyable way to own a genuine piece of motoring history, equally suited to relaxed weekend drives as to classic car events.
