The private seller offers for sale this 2001 Mercedes-Benz G 500 Short Wheelbase, powered by a 4966 cc V8 engine, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Finished in Titanite Red Metallic (Titanitrot-Metallic) over a black leather interior, this three-door G 500 combines the compact proportions of the short wheelbase body with the strong M113 V8, rated at 218 kW (296 hp). The factory specification is generous and includes the Exclusive package, heated front seats, a heated windscreen, the COMAND operating and display system with navigation, an ultrasonic reversing aid, a hands-free Nokia phone kit, walnut trim, a leather and walnut steering wheel and gear selector, velour floor mats, stainless steel side running boards, a stainless steel spare wheel cover, a chrome-effect radiator grille, protective side mouldings all round and a tow bar. The car has since been tastefully upgraded with Nolden LED headlights (including conversion to electric headlight range adjustment), a stainless steel exhaust system with twin side exits on both sides and black Brabus Monoblock VI 20-inch wheels. The original black 18-inch wheels are included in the sale.
In 08/2020, approximately 5,000 km ago, a Prins VSI 2.0 LPG system was installed; the receipts are present and the installation has been entered in the registration documents. The LPG tank is neatly fitted in the load compartment, allowing the V8 to run on both petrol and autogas. According to the seller there is no maintenance backlog, and the documented service history at Mercedes-Benz includes inspections at 26,185 km (09/2003), 37,755 km (02/2005), 43,102 km (08/2006), 61,383 km (11/2007), 88,095 km (07/2015), 97,654 km (11/2016), 102,382 km (12/2017), 108,501 km (08/2019), 116,601 km (09/2021), 117,773 km (09/2023) and 118,500 km (10/2026). The car comes with a fresh TÜV inspection and a new service.
The G-Class needs little introduction. Developed by Mercedes-Benz together with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria, it was launched in 1979 as an uncompromising off-roader and has been built in Graz ever since. In 1990 the W463 generation brought permanent four-wheel drive, three differential locks and a considerably more comfortable, better equipped interior, turning the G into a luxury all-terrain vehicle without diluting its abilities. The G 500 with the 5.0-litre V8 became the most powerful non-AMG version of the range, offering effortless performance and a distinctive V8 soundtrack. The short wheelbase three-door body is the most compact and agile version of the G, with its shorter wheelbase and a purposeful, boxy stance that is instantly recognisable.
This G 500 represents a well specified and well documented example of an icon that has only grown in stature over the years. With its rich red paintwork, black leather and walnut cabin, Brabus wheels, LED lighting and economical LPG running, it is ready to be enjoyed on the road and off it, and it will appeal to anyone looking for a characterful short wheelbase G-Class with a V8 under the bonnet.
