The private seller offers for sale this 1978 Porsche 928, powered by a 4.5-litre V8 engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission. It is offered as a well-kept family heirloom that has lived in a garage, and it is being sold only because the premises where it was stored are being cleared. Apart from a sports exhaust, the car remains in standard specification, finished in a dark exterior colour over a green leather interior and riding on black-finished alloy wheels.

The current owners acquired the car in 2011 as its fourth owners. Since then it has formed part of a classic car collection and was used mainly for holiday trips, rarely if ever in winter and only in good weather. Throughout this period maintenance and repair work has been carried out on an ongoing basis, with a total investment of more than EUR 12,000. Among other things, the camshaft drive including timing belt and tensioner was renewed in 2019, and the water pump, fuel tank and clutch bearing have been replaced. Air conditioning was retrofitted at the same time.

Most recently the car received a service to factory specification, including engine oil, brake fluid, spark plugs, battery, clutch master cylinder and air conditioning refrigerant. The fuel distributor of the injection system was overhauled as part of this work. The car is registered on German historic “H” plates and has just passed its German roadworthiness inspection. Please note that the engine is not the original unit; it was replaced with an exchange engine under previous ownership.

Cosmetically, the paint shows signs of use and age in places, and only minor traces of corrosion are present. The interior, including the leather seats, would benefit from partial refurbishment, which offers a new owner a rewarding project to bring the cabin up to the standard of the rest of the car.

The 928 was a radical departure for Porsche when it was launched in 1977. Conceived as the eventual successor to the 911, it combined a front-mounted, water-cooled aluminium V8 with a rear-mounted transaxle for near-ideal weight distribution, and its sophisticated Weissach rear axle gave it remarkable stability. In 1978 it became the first and so far only sports car to be named European Car of the Year. Its smooth, rounded shape with pop-up headlights and integrated body-coloured bumpers still looks modern today.

The early cars, like this one, are appreciated for their clean lines without the later rear spoiler, the availability of a manual gearbox and a technically simpler layout, which keeps maintenance more manageable than on later versions. As a grand tourer with room for four and a generous hatchback luggage area, the 928 is built for covering long distances in comfort, and the combination of V8 torque and a manual gearbox gives it a distinctly engaging character. With a documented maintenance history in recent years and a fresh inspection, this 928 is ready to be enjoyed on the road.
