The private seller offers for sale this 1969 MG Midget Mark III, powered by a 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Finished in blue with a black interior, this right-hand drive Midget has been in the hands of its current owner since 2009. The paintwork is believed to be original, and together with the original chrome and windscreen it shows the natural patina of a car of this age, including some small scratches and marks. The cabin, by contrast, has been completely renewed with nappa leather seats and panels, hand-made carpets, and a hand-made hood and covers, giving the car a fresh and inviting interior.
Mechanically, the engine has been completely overhauled using new parts including pistons and bearings, with machining of the surfaces, and the gearbox has been inspected and overhauled where needed. Further upgrades include a high-torque starter motor, a 123 electronic ignition, a new brake master cylinder and a modern cartridge-type oil filter. The electrics are reported to be working and a new battery was fitted in 2025. Regular periodic maintenance has been carried out, and photos of the restoration work, invoices for the parts used and the original workshop manual all come with the car. As with any classic, some further minor maintenance could be carried out to improve it even more.
The MG Midget was introduced in 1961 as the MG version of the Austin-Healey Sprite and was built at the famous MG factory in Abingdon. It quickly became one of the most popular and affordable British sports cars, bringing open-top motoring within reach of a wide audience. The Mark III, launched in 1966, received the larger 1,275 cc version of the BMC A-Series engine, closely related to the unit used in the Mini Cooper S, along with a permanently attached folding hood that made daily use easier than ever before.
Light, compact and nimble, the Midget offers a pure and direct driving experience with quick steering, a lively engine and a wonderful sense of connection to the road. It is the quintessential small British sports car: easy to maintain, supported by a plentiful parts supply and a large, active club scene, and just as much fun on a country road today as it was more than fifty years ago. With its refreshed engine, renewed interior and patinated paintwork, this Midget offers an appealing combination of character and usability.
