Introduced in 1985, the 944 Turbo (internally known as the 951) transformed Porsche’s transaxle four-cylinder sports car into a genuine high-performance machine. Its 2.5-litre engine was fitted with a water-cooled KKK turbocharger and an intercooler, producing 220 hp and enabling a top speed of around 245 km/h. Porsche engineers upgraded the brakes, suspension and cooling to match, and the Turbo received its own smooth, aerodynamic front and rear design. On its launch, the 944 Turbo was widely praised by the motoring press as one of the best-balanced sports cars of its era, offering performance that rivalled the contemporary 911 at a considerably lower cost.
The secret of the 944’s handling lies in its transaxle layout, with the engine at the front and the gearbox mounted at the rear, giving the car an almost perfect weight distribution. Combined with the strong mid-range torque of the turbocharged engine, this results in a car that is fast, composed and remarkably usable every day.
