The seller offers for sale this 1983 Land Rover Santana 109 Super, powered by a 2.3-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. This five-door station wagon was built in Spain by Santana and is equipped with power steering and a brake servo, making it considerably more comfortable to drive than many of its contemporaries. The car has recently been finished in a matte beige 2K paint, although a number of light marks and small dents are visible. The odometer shows 76425 km, which is the reading as shown and has not been verified. The front seats have been replaced by black seats with headrests, and the car is fitted with a roof rack, side steps and a rear-mounted spare wheel.
The seller has carried out a considerable amount of work on the car. Where needed the brakes have been overhauled, with several brake cylinders, brake lines and hoses replaced, new brake shoes all round and new front brake drums. The rear lights have been renewed including improved wiring, the channels for the rear sliding windows have been renewed on both sides, the front spring bushes have been replaced and four nearly new tyres have been fitted. A tow bar, also suitable for a bicycle carrier, is fitted. The seller describes the chassis and bulkhead as solid. Gear changes are reasonable, with some play in the gear lever and slight play in the driveshafts. The car has a valid roadworthiness inspection until September 2028.
Santana began building Land Rovers under licence in Linares, Spain, in 1958. What started as the assembly of Series vehicles soon grew into a manufacturer with its own engineering and development, producing models that were adapted to Spanish and export markets. The 109 Super was one of Santana’s own developments, based on the long-wheelbase Series III but featuring a number of Santana-specific improvements. Santana Land Rovers were exported to many countries and earned a strong reputation for their toughness and simplicity.
The long-wheelbase 109 is the most practical of the classic leaf-sprung Land Rovers, offering generous room for passengers and luggage. With its ladder chassis, aluminium body panels, selectable four-wheel drive and a low-range transfer box, it is built to go almost anywhere. The robust 2.3-litre diesel is known for its simplicity and longevity. Today the classic Land Rover is a true icon with a large enthusiast following, and this Spanish-built 109 Super station wagon, with its power steering and extensive recent brake work, is an appealing and characterful example for both collectors and adventurers.
