The seller offers for sale this 1959 Porsche-Diesel Junior 108, powered by an 822 cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine, paired with a manual gearbox. Porsche’s involvement with tractors goes back a long way further than most people realise. Ferdinand Porsche drew up a people’s tractor in the 1930s along the same lines as the people’s car, and after the war the design was built under licence by Allgaier in Uhingen. In 1956 Mannesmann bought the rights, moved production to the old Zeppelin works in Friedrichshafen and put the tractors on the market under the Porsche-Diesel name. The range was built around one family of air-cooled diesel engines and was named by cylinder count: the single-cylinder Junior, the twin-cylinder Standard, the three-cylinder Super and the four-cylinder Master. The Junior sat at the bottom of that ladder, its 822 cc single producing 14 hp, which was ample for the smallholdings and orchards it was aimed at.
Production ran until 1963, when Mannesmann closed the tractor division to concentrate elsewhere, and by then roughly 125,000 Porsche-Diesel tractors had left Friedrichshafen. The Junior has since become the most recognisable of them, as much for the shape and the badge as for what it does, and it turns up today at shows, classic gatherings and in collections alongside rather faster machinery wearing the same name. This one is offered as a restored example for a collector or for use at events.
