The seller offers for sale this 1969 Triumph TR6, powered by a 2,498 cc six-cylinder engine, paired with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive on third and fourth gears. It left the factory as a TR6 PI, the European specification fitted with Lucas mechanical petrol injection, and has since been converted to run on twin Stromberg carburettors, a change many owners make for the sake of simpler running and easier servicing. The seller reports that the body is solid all round, that the paintwork is tidy and that the leather interior has been looked after. The engine is a factory rebuilt unit rather than the one the car left Coventry with, so this is not a matching numbers example.
The TR6 arrived in 1968 as the last of the traditional Triumph sports cars, and it remains the one most people picture when the name comes up. Giovanni Michelotti’s TR4 shape was reworked front and rear by Karmann in Osnabrück, who squared off the nose and tail into a design that looked thoroughly modern without losing the upright, purposeful stance of its predecessor. Underneath sat the 2.5-litre straight-six, independent rear suspension and rack and pinion steering, a combination that gave the TR6 a muscular, torque-rich character quite unlike the four-cylinder British sports cars it competed against. The straight-six also gives the car its voice, a deep and unmistakable sound that is a large part of why the model is still so sought after.
Of the roughly 91,850 TR6s built between 1968 and 1976, the overwhelming majority crossed the Atlantic to North America, which makes a car delivered new on the European mainland comparatively uncommon. This one has been used over the past two summers by the current owner and is offered as a driver’s car rather than a static exhibit. It is a cabriolet in the purest sense of the word, and one of the most recognisable shapes in the classic sports car world.
