The seller offers for sale this 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL, powered by a 3,459 cc V8 petrol engine, paired with an automatic transmission. This example is an early production car of the R107 series, finished in solid yellow with leather upholstery, a striking and very period-correct combination. The car was imported in 2011 and holds a Dutch registration card, though it has hardly been used in the last two years. The original hardtop is included, and according to the seller the fabric of the soft top is in fresh condition. The dashboard is intact and the chrome of the bumpers is in good condition.
The car has been resprayed once in the past, not professionally, in the original colour: the paint shows a slight orange peel effect, some dust inclusions and overspray on several rubbers, while the gloss of the paint is reasonable to good and several smaller paint blemishes are present. The upholstery of the driver’s seat is damaged, the door handles show some weathering, and the front bumper sits slightly askew, with the left side a little lower than the right. The engine currently does not run on LPG. The engine runs, the gearbox shifts and the car brakes, though when reverse is engaged it takes some time before it takes hold, and given the long period of standstill the seller notes that the car should of course be fully checked over.
The R107 SL is one of the longest-running and most beloved models Mercedes-Benz ever built, remaining in production from 1971 all the way to 1989. It combined open-top glamour with the solidity and engineering depth for which the brand was famous, and its V8-powered versions offered effortless, relaxed performance. Early cars such as this 1972 350 SL are increasingly appreciated by collectors, featuring the purest details of the original design. With its rare solid yellow colour, included hardtop and honest presentation, this example offers an attractive starting point for anyone looking to enter R107 ownership.
