– Landmark Loewy-designed coupé, part of Studebaker’s celebrated 1953 ‘European look’ range

The seller offers for sale this 1953 Studebaker Champion, powered by a 2.8-litre six-cylinder engine, paired with a manual transmission. Finished in a soft light green over a beige cloth interior, this two-door Champion wears the long, low coupé bodystyle that defined the 1953 Studebaker range. The brightwork, bumpers and full wheel covers are present, and the car sits on body-coloured wheels with chrome hubcaps. The exterior presents in good condition, with the distinctive front-end treatment, the V-shaped hood emblem and the flowing roofline all clearly on show in the photographs.

The 1953 model year marked one of the most significant moments in Studebaker’s long history. Founded in South Bend, Indiana, in 1852 as a wagon builder, the company moved into automobiles in the early twentieth century. For 1953 it introduced an entirely new range of coupés styled under Raymond Loewy’s design studio, with Robert Bourke leading the work. Their low bonnet line, slim pillars and restrained use of chrome stood apart from the heavier American styling of the period and earned the cars a lasting reputation. The Champion was the six-cylinder series of the range, positioned below the V8-powered Commander, and these coupés are today regarded as among the most elegant American designs of the 1950s.
